JANUARY 2012

Monday, January 23rd, 6 PM ~ “Food and Mood”- a Cancer Support Community Program.  A facinating look into how food impacts not just our bodies but our minds as well, facilitated by Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN. Saturday, January 28th, 10 AM until 2 PM. The Third Annual Pre-school and Activities Fair.  The MOMS Club of Rehoboth Beach Area is hosting this can’t be missed event for local families. This year’s fair will be held at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN will be distributing kid-friendly/mom-approved recipes, a tasty treat, along with some helpful food and nutrition tips for busy families. FEBRUARY 2012

Saturday, February 4th, 8:00 AM. “Beach Power Clean Up!”. Join your friends, family, and members of our community for this first event hosted by “Gym 2 Gym”, a new fitness community organization formed through a partnership through The Body Shop Fitness Center in Rehoboth and Quest Fitness in Lewes.  Meet at The Body Shop located on the corner of First and Wilmington Streets in the First Street Station, dress warmly and be ready to go on a fun beach walk/run led by trainers from The Body Shop and Quest. Follow-up this invigorating work-out with a beach clean-up immediately after! Are you confused about the condition, and wonder what types of foods you should be eating? Then this lively and informative program is for you. Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN, will provide you with just the right information you need to manage or help a loved one manage this disease, and Kathleen Splane, MS will tempt your tastebuds with a selection of delicious and diabetic-friendly recipes for you to sample each night. Class size is limited and this program books up quickly! Monday, March 5th, 6 PM. “Gluten Free for Me!” Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN and Chef Kris Etze, personal chef, team up for this interactive and fun class that is all about gluten-free eating. Participants will learn the difference between gluten-intolerance and celiac disease, why some individuals chose to follow a gluten-free lifestyle while not suffering from either, and how to shop and cook if following a gluten-free diet. Participants will receive lots of helpful handouts and take part in a hands-on cooking lesson with Chef Kris, as well as get to take their yummy dishes home with them. Monday, April 16th and Thursday, April 19th. Where Do Veggies Come From? Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN, will be facilitating a two day series of classes (three programs each day) teaching the children ages 2-4 at Kids Cottage about where our delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables come from – the ground, trees, plants, flowering bushes and vines, through an interactive storybook reading as well as written, visual and tactile activities designed to entertain, educate and stimulate! Wednesday, May 9th, 6 PM ~ The Virtues of Going Veggie” – a Cancer Support Community Program.  An introductory overview of the benefits of following a plant-based diet, the different types of vegetarianism, as well as dietary guidelines concerning  protein, vitamins and minerals to ensure adequate nutrition, facilitated by Lisa Harkins, RD, LDN.
